Remember back in December when Avril Lavigne revealed (through chatting with a fan) that she was suffering from sort of mystery illness? It turns out the “Hello Kitty” singer has been afflicted with what People says is a severe case of Lyme disease — something that kept her bedridden for five months.

Last October Avril went to Las Vegas with some girlfriends to celebrate her 30th birthday party. “I could barely eat, and when we went to the pool, I had to leave and go lie in bed,” Lavigne says in this week’s People cover story. “My friends asked, ‘What’s wrong?’ I didn’t know.”

Avril says she was apparently bitten by a tick sometime last spring, which led to her feeling lethargic for months before her diagnosis. Her mother has since moved in with her in Ontario to care for the singer, while husband Chad Kroeger has been on the road touring with Nickelback.

And if you ever doubted Lyme disease is seriously nasty business, check out these quotes:

“I had no idea a bug bite could do this. I was bedridden for five months.”

“I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move. I thought I was dying.”

“There were definitely times I couldn’t shower for a full week because I could barely stand. It felt like having all your life sucked out of you.”

Ick. Poor thing. The good news is that she tells the mag that she’s 80% better at this point. Get well soon, Avril!
