St. Vincent’s “New York” Video Is Delightfully Offbeat
St. Vincent takes a cautious step towards pop on “New York.” Co-produced with Jack Antonoff, the first taste of her fifth studio album is a melancholy mid-tempo build around lilting piano keys. It’s softer and somehow brighter (despite the lyrical content) than her previous work, but still as vital and incisive as ever. While other collaborators have been tempted to drift deep into the Fun. producer’s ’80s synth-addled world — think Taylor Swift and Lorde — Annie Clark invites him into hers.
The result is one of the best almost-pop songs of 2017 that could substantially widen the singer/songwriter’s already loyal fanbase. The video arrives today (August 31) and it’s a delightfully offbeat. Directed by Alex Da Corte, the clip segues effortlessly between colorful set-pieces and arty poses. “I think Annie’s New York is the New York of my dreams — one that is blurry and fractured, dreamy and flat,” the director muses. “It is the Toontown to my Hollywood. It is beautiful but slightly out of reach.” Watch up top.
